Articles and Advice from our Pet Expert

My daughter wants to walk the cat on a leash. Is this okay?

CatOnLeashSome cats will oblige you by walking on a leash, but most won’t. Be sure to prepare your daughter that kitty may not want to walk on a leash. However, it’s certainly worth a try!

First, be sure to obtain a well fitting cat harness. A cat can easily “back out” of a collar when on a leash. Start by walking kitty in a quiet, secure area such as a backyard or a cul de sac. Too many distractions such as cars and people may frighten your cat.

Keep the walks short at first and allow kitty to explore a bit, rather than feel like he or she is being dragged along on a leash. Try brining some yummy cat treats and reward the cat for walking short distances alongside you on the leash.

If your cat doesn’t enjoy the leash, you’ll know it pretty quickly. The key is to make it a very positive experience for them.
