Floorcare Leader Shares Eco Improvements and Goals at International Home + Housewares Show
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., March 22, 2009 - This week at the International Home + Housewares Show in Chicago, BISSELL Homecare, Inc. will share the company’s progress and new objectives for "becoming a little greener," such as the increased use of post consumer plastic in the Green Little Green, a practice that recycles millions of pounds of plastic annually. Efforts are led by the ForEver Green Team, an internal group dedicated to researching, communicating and implementing strategies to improve BISSELL’s environmental practices in product design, packaging, logistics, and facility design and operations. These goals represent a long-term commitment to sustainability, and they are visible in BISSELL's industry recognition, recycling tactics and product development.
"Earth-friendly practices are supported at every level of the company," says Scott Boles, ForEver Green Team chair. "All our employees make personal green goals to implement at the office. We tie these goals back to company-wide sustainability efforts, so there is continuous improvement led by management support. After all, everyone has a responsibility to take care of our environment – to leave it a better place for our next generation."
As evidence of its continued commitment to environmental leadership and corporate responsibility, BISSELL this year joined the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) SmartWay Transport Partnership. Through the program, BISSELL will use only SmartWay compliant carriers dedicated to increasing energy efficiency while significantly reducing greenhouse gases and air pollution.
Other earth-friendly practices are enacted at the shipping docks, where trucks idle for just 20 minutes when dropping off and picking up materials, as opposed to two hours. And forklifts are operated by rechargeable batteries instead of natural gases like propane. In fact, BISSELL is working to reduce energy consumption five percent across its own facilities and those of its partners by 2010.
In the manufacturing process, BISSELL implements product remanufacturing and closed loop recycling. In fact, chemical bottles are made from an average of 30 percent recycled plastic, and BISSELL aims to eliminate Styrofoam from all cartons by the end of this year.
In 2009, BISSELL’s popular Green Little Green will become even greener. Now, BISSELL will produce the portable deep cleaner with a minimum of 50 percent post consumer recycled plastic – an increase from less than 10 percent only a year ago. In fact, if every adult in the U.S. purchased a Green Little Green, it would be like recycling 658 million pounds of plastic, or 20 million bags of trash.
What’s more, BISSELL formulas for use in both portable and upright deep cleaners, as well as most manual formulas, contain biodegradable detergents and have no phosphates, dyes, optical brighteners or heavy metals. All BISSELL machine formulas carry the EPA’s Design for the Environment (DfE) certification, which is recognized for safer chemistry. And, BISSELL was recently named a “Champion Formulator” in the DfE program's Safer Detergents Stewardship Initiative (SDSI), recognizing BISSELL’s industry leadership in developing environmentally friendly floor-care formulas.
A highlight in this category is BISSELL Super Concentrate, a deep cleaning formula that produces less waste, uses less packaging, and requires fewer transportation resources. Enough formula to clean 400,000 rooms can be shipped in one truck, whereas dilute formulas can require five. This unique and user friendly product reduces those transportation greenhouse gases by 80 percent.
Soon, consumers may have another way to recognize greener BISSELL products, as the company is working with the industry and competitors toward an Energy Star Program for upright vacuums.
