GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., September 19, 2016 – BISSELL Homecare, Inc., a leader in cleaning solutions, is proud to be celebrating its 140th anniversary. For more than a century, the Grand Rapids, Mich. business has been family owned and operated, committed to providing cleaning and floor care solutions to help busy households tackle messes quickly and efficiently.

In 1876, Melville R. Bissell devised a unique carpet sweeper to clean sawdust off the carpet of his crockery shop in Grand Rapids. A new business was born after family and friends began asking for the carpet sweeper and he patented the design. Following Melville’s death in 1889, Anna Bissell took over the company and was America’s first female CEO. She was known as a progressive executive, introducing innovative labor relations policies like employee compensation, insurance, paid sick leave and pension plans, long before these practices were widespread.

“This year we’re taking time to reflect on and celebrate all that BISSELL has accomplished over the past 140 years and to thank our associates, past and present, for their dedication,” said Jim Krzeminski, President, BISSELL Homecare North America. “BISSELL is a leader in the floor care industry and still operates with the passion and integrity on which Melville and Anna Bissell founded our company. They would be proud to see BISSELL today.”

Throughout the decades, BISSELL has focused on making cleaning easier so that families can spend less time cleaning and more time living. In 1956, the company introduced the manual carpet shampooer. During the 1960s, BISSELL manufactured stick vacuums – the BISSELL Multi-Vac and 3-Way Vac were two of many industry best sellers. In 1979, BISSELL pioneered the home-owned carpet cleaner category with the introduction of the Carpet Machine and formally introduced its line of branded vacuums in 1996.  Today, more BISSELL vacuums are sold in the United States than any other brand.[1]

In recent years BISSELL has focused on creating products specifically for families with pets. To further that commitment, in 2011, BISSELL established the BISSELL Pet Foundation, a non-profit organization committed to supporting groups throughout the United States and Canada who are dedicated to helping reduce the number of animals in shelters and rescues through pet adoption, spay neuter programs, microchipping and foster care.

To help celebrate this milestone, BISSELL is giving away 140 products through its social media channels and a celebration for BISSELL employees will take place at the Grand Rapids Public Museum.
