GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., July 21, 2016 – A sculpture honoring America’s first ever female CEO, Anna Sutherland Bissell, has been unveiled in BISSELL Homecare, Inc.’s hometown of Grand Rapids, Mich. The bronze, 7-foot sculpture was unveiled as part of the Grand Rapids Community Legends Project, celebrating people important to Grand Rapids history.

Anna Bissell took over as CEO of BISSELL following the death of her husband Melville Bissell in 1889, and by 1899 had created one of the largest corporations in the world at that time.

Anna was known as a progressive executive who showed concern for her employees, introducing innovative labor relations policies, including employee compensation, insurance, paid sick leave and pension plans, long before these practices were widespread. She served as president and CEO until 1919, and remained chair of the board until 1934. Anna was also an involved philanthropist, especially in programs for children and women.

“This year is our 140th anniversary,” said Mark Bissell, Chairman and CEO. “I think Anna would be proud knowing that her company is flourishing, is a leader in its industry and still operates with passion and the highest level of integrity. Her legacy was not rested upon. It has been built upon and has never been taken for granted.”

The sculpture was created by Ann Hirsch, a contemporary artist known for her work representing women’s self-expression. It was presented during an event open to the general public by the Peter Secchia family, the Bissell family, officials with the Grand Rapids-Kent County Convention/Arena Authority (CAA) and other dignitaries.
