My pets are creatures of habit, and I bet yours are, too. At about 6:00 a.m. each morning, my cat Turtle joins me for coffee on the sofa. If I sleep in, I find her downstairs waiting patiently for me. My other cat Olivia predictably perches on her favorite armchair in the loft every afternoon. At that time of day, the sun hits the chair just right, giving her the perfect spot to soak up the warmth.

One of the best things I ever did for my best friend Buck, a yellow Labrador mix, was throw him a birthday party. Buck was turning 13 and, given his health issues, we were pretty sure it might be the last birthday we would celebrate with him. He was part of our family, so my husband Paul and I decided to throw an outdoor birthday party in his honor.

If you have kids, be prepared. For a pet, that is. Every parent of a young child knows that at some point their child will pine for a pet of their own. While that pet will most often be a dog or cat, for a child, any pet -- whether finned, feathered or on all fours -- will provide friendship and teach important life lessons

Spring has sprung – birds are chirping, flowers are blooming and Good Samaritans across the country are channeling positive energy into National Volunteer Month in April. My friends at BISSELL are rallying local volunteers across the U.S., Canada, Mexico and Hong Kong to clean Ronald McDonald houses from top to bottom, and my adopted dog Chilly and I are planning to collect donations from our pet-loving friends and family to give to his alma mater, the SPCA Tampa Bay.

Every Super Bowl Sunday, we find pet lovers cheering for the underdogs, tailgating with friends, or panting over clever commercials, but a new trend sweeping the nation will help pets and pet parents score a touchdown together on game day.
