August 21st is National Senior Citizen’s Day. It’s a day set aside to let our senior citizens know how much we care about them. We also wanted to take today to recognize another group of seniors that are special to us – senior pets. BISSELL® is passionate about helping BISSELL Pet Foundation® (BPF) carry out its mission to find every pet a home and that includes senior pets. So far, BPF has helped save the lives of more than 188,312 pets, and they don’t show any signs of stopping.
Unfortunately, many senior pets get left at shelters. That’s where BPF steps in and shines by helping pay for pet adoptions at its Empty the Shelters events each year. BPF also has a Partners for Pets program that helps you find a nearby shelter, so you can find out about adoptable pets. You’ll see just about every shelter has senior pets available!
The American Veterinary Medical Association considers dogs to be of senior age once they hit 5 or 6 years old, depending on the breed. Cats are considered seniors when they’re about 10 years old. Many senior pets end up in shelters because their owners get a new pet, add a baby to their family, move homes, or pass away. Because so many pets end up in shelters, BISSELL Pet Foundation wants you to consider these benefits of adopting a senior pet:
- What you see is what you get.
- Exercise is not as critical.
- Size is not a mystery.
- Puppy phase is over.
- They are grateful.
The foundation goes into detail about all of these benefits in this blog post.
Because there are so many senior pets in shelters, they face a high risk of euthanasia, but you can help! Even if you and your family are not ready to adopt a pet, you can still help us save pets. For each BISSELL pet product purchased, BISSELL will donate a portion of that purchase to BISSELL Pet Foundation, so it can continue finding pets forever homes.* And mark your calendars! In November, that’s when we’ll celebrate National Adopt a Senior Pet Month, so you’ve got plenty of time to consider adopting an older pet!
*Activate at BISSELL.com/SavePets. BISSELL will donate at least $1 million per year to BISSELL Pet Foundation®. BPF is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization which assists animal welfare organizations in their efforts to reduce the number of homeless pets in shelters and rescues.
