The holiday season can be hard on your home, but it doesn’t have to be! There are plenty of ways to set yourself up for a successful and less stressful holiday season. This post focuses on Thanksgiving house cleaning, but rest assured we’ll have Christmas-focused tips coming your way soon.
Plan on It
Ideally, Thanksgiving home prep should start a few weeks before the actual holiday. Especially if you’re having guests over for that big turkey dinner. This way, you are not saving everything until the last minute, because let’s be honest, having to cook Thanksgiving dinner for everyone is hard enough. Throw in the stress of cleaning your home and it can get overwhelming very quickly. That’s where our tips come in! Our first tip is all about preparation. Write out a detailed Thanksgiving cleaning checklist. Assign yourself tasks each day, or every other day, depending on how early you start preparing your home for the holidays. If you have a significant other and/or kids at home, assign them a few tasks, too. Cleaning the house to get ready for holiday company can be a team effort.
One of the biggest to-do on your Thanksgiving cleaning checklist may be cleaning your carpets. We see a huge increase in people wanting to clean their carpets in the weeks (or days) before the whole family arrives. November is as good a time as any to break out your carpet cleaner and set aside a few hours to give your carpets the deep clean they deserve. If you don’t have a carpet cleaner at home, you can always rent one of ours. We offer rentals of our Big Green® Carpet Cleaner at retailers across the country, and you can find the location nearest to you by clicking here. You can also buy your very own Big Green and enjoy a professional-level of clean carpets whenever you want!
“It's great to have it in my home so that I can clean a small spot or if I just decide to do one room... I can clean carpets before our family gatherings and holidays, all ON MY OWN SCHEDULE rather than killing myself trying to get it all done in one day. I [think] you'll absolutely love this machine!!!”*

Preparing and cleaning the house for company goes beyond just the carpets. Take some time to think about where people will gather in your home. If you’re worried about everyone having a place to sit, put a few extra folding chairs in a nearby storage closet. And speaking of storage, designate a room, or closet, for where you’ll put guests’ coats. This helps reduce the look of clutter when everyone is over and makes it easy for everyone to find their coat when it’s time to leave.
Stock up on Snacks
The best (and sometimes worst) part of the holidays is never knowing who may just stop by for a visit in the next few weeks. We already covered the Thanksgiving cleaning tips, but what about Thanksgiving entertaining tips? There are a lot of things you can do to make sure your home feels welcoming to anyone who stops by, including having scented candles lit or some holiday decorations on display. It's also a good idea to stock up on some extra snacks to have on standby for visitors. Whether it’s a few pre-made dips, chips and crackers, or all of the fixings for an extravagant cheeseboard, having some snacks on hand will help you feel ready to entertain this holiday season.
Make an Emergency Mess Kit
Once the Thanksgiving parties and gatherings get started, things can get messy. Between the kids taking laps around the kitchen and Aunt Martha talking with her hands, it’s hard to keep other people’s spills and stains under control. Red wine is one of the most common stains this time of year. There’s also the potential for soda stains, gravy stains, pet accidents, and so many others. That’s why we recommend putting together an emergency mess kit. There’s no set list of what should be in it, but we do have a few staples that are good to have close by. Our Stomp ‘n Go® Pet Stain Lifting Pads come in packs of 20, so they’ll cover you for quite a few Thanksgiving messes. Plus, they’re so easy to use.
”…all you have to do is just stomp on them and let it do the rest 30 minutes later come back the stain is all gone! Having 3 dogs and a cat these are very useful for accidents. I always make sure I have them on hand. Would definitely recommend.”* ~Lisakay011

We have plenty of spray formulas that are perfect for quickly removing spots and stains. One of our favorites is our Tough Stain Pretreat for Carpet & Upholstery. This formula is perfect for messes that happen on the carpet or upholstery. All you have to do is follow the directions on the bottle and let it go to work on the stain. If the stain is bad enough, you may have to use a portable carpet cleaner to scrub away the mess.
Hopefully these tips for cleaning and hosting Thanksgiving have you less stressed about guests, expected or unexpected. Happy cleaning AND happy Thanksgiving!
