Spring Cleaning: The Only Carpet Cleaning Guide You’ll Need This Season

Sticky Floors

When people ask – and it happens all the time - we advise people to clean their carpets at least twice a year, if not at the change of every season. We like to compare it to your clothes. If you really want to clean your clothes, you wash them with water and soap, right? The same goes for your carpet. And it makes sense that at least one of those carpet cleanings should be done during Spring Cleaning. We figured a lot of people may be planning to deep clean their carpets this time of year, so we put together this comprehensive guide to carpet cleaning.

First things first, you need the right tools. We’re talking pre-treat solutions, machines, formulas, the works. Because we’re the experts in all things floorcare, we have all the floor cleaning machines that you need. We’ve got upright, portable and even canister carpet cleaning machines to choose from. It’s all broken down here and we’ve made it easy to make sure you’re buying the right machine with our product selector.

Once you’ve got your machine picked out, it’s time to get to work. This is where our resident Carpet Cleaning expert and Senior Chemist, Mike Foote comes in. He recommends these steps for successful Spring Cleaning carpet deep cleaning.

  • Remove furniture from the room you’re planning to clean. This way you know you’re getting all areas of your carpet clean. And since it’s Spring Cleaning season, maybe you’ll even be able to declutter some furniture from the room you’re cleaning – if that’s on your to-do list.
  • Vacuum you carpet to remove any loose dirt and debris.
  • Pretreat all the stains you know need some extra TLC. We have many pre-treat formulas, but the best one for you depends on what mess you’re trying to clean. We love the power of our Oxy Stain Destroyer Pet for Carpet and Upholstery. This guy really packs a punch. Use it on any tough, colored stains you see prior to carpet cleaning. Oxy Stain Destroyer Pet enhances the results of carpet cleaning when it comes to cleaning tough stains like urine, grape juice, red wine, and even motor oil! It starts working the second it makes contact with the stain: mobilizing, lifting and penetrating it at the source, so all you’re left with is a fresh scent! Another one of our favorite pre-treat formulas is the Professional Power Shot® Oxy Carpet Stain Remover. As its name suggests, you get professional stain removal results by yourself. It uses StainLift Technology™ to permanently remove stains before you start to use your carpet cleaner.

  • Find your formula. Did your carpet take a real beating with pet messes this winter? It’s a good idea to use a formula like our Professional Pet Urine Eliminator + Oxy Carpet Formula. For a formula that removes deep down dirt and leaves behind a noticeably fresh scent, use our Deep Clean + Refresh with Febreze Linen & Sky Formula. If you’re looking to clean and control odor-causing bacteria from the source, you’ll want to try our Deep Clean + Antibacterial Carpet Formula. Another one of our favorites to recommend, especially during Spring Cleaning, is our 2X® Deep Clean + Protect Carpet Cleaning Formula. This formula not only keeps your carpets looking newer longer, it also uses Scotchgard™ Stain Protection to protect your carpet from stubborn stains in the future.
  • Give it a boost. Don’t be mad at us, but we may have saved the best formulas for last. (We’ve gotta keep you reading somehow, right?) Our special Boost formulas can be used in addition to pre-treat formula and our regular machine formula to get even more power when you clean. Just pour a little Boost in with your regular formula to see big results. For more powerful cleaning, try Pro Boost Carpet Cleaning Formula Enhancer and for a little boost to help with pet stains, try our Pet Oxy boost Carpet Cleaning Formula Enhancer.
  • Ready, set, clean! When it comes down to it, carpet cleaning is really as easy as pushing a vacuum. If you think about it, it’s a very similar motion. To begin, start in the farthest corner of the room you’re cleaning, so you’re able to get out, and not trapped in the room by wet carpet. Make two wet passes with your machine, which means to push it forward and backward with the spray button pressed down, followed by two passes without the spray button pressed (we call these the dry passes). Keep it up until you’ve cleaned all the carpet in the room.

  • Rinse. This step isn’t required, but we highly recommend rinsing your carpet once it’s cleaned. We think Mike Foote explains it best when he says “You’re going to have a lot of dirty solution that’s still going to come up. You’ll be surprised at how much is there, and that’s the value of why you go back to rinse your carpet.” All you have to do is fill your machine with warm water (no formula) and make additional wet and dry passes over the area you just cleaned. It’s like a rinse cycle on your washing machine, but for your carpet!
  • Dry time. This is a very important step in carpet cleaning. You need to give your carpets enough time to dry before putting any furniture back in the room. Doing so ensures your carpets’ fibers don’t get crushed down while they’re wet. Dry time does depend on a few things, including the type of carpet you have, the thickness of the pad and how many wet passes vs. dry passes you did. On average, we recommend waiting at least 4-6 hours before walking on your clean carpet. To dry carpets faster, try having a fan in the room or use a de-humidifier.
