A Stress-Free Spring Break Trip Starts at Home: Be Prepared with These Expert Tips

Spring Break is a much-anticipated time of year for all ages – kids look forward to it pretty much all year, and I know parents do, too! It doesn’t matter how excited you are for the trip; as someone who’s done it before, I know packing up your family and leaving for a week can be stressful. Regardless of if you’re hopping on a plane, loading up the car or kicking back on a train (or a combination of all of these!), I know each mode of transportation can come with its own set of stressors. While it would be easy for me to just tell you not to stress about the trip, I know that’s not a really helpful approach. What is helpful is setting you up for success before, during and after your trip, so let’s get to it!

Even if you’ve done most of your preparation already, it never hurts to double check that you’re really ready to hit the road. Leaving for a week is a big deal, especially if you have pets at home. Make sure you’ve made arrangements for Fido. This could involve calling up your favorite pet sitter or booking a weeklong stay at your furry friend’s favorite overnight doggy daycare. It’s also a good idea to ask a neighbor to keep an eye on your home while you’re away just to make sure nothing suspicious is taking place.

Once your pets and home are taken care of, you can focus on getting the rest of your family and yourself ready. Start by listing out what everyone needs to pack. Make sure to toss in an extra empty bag for anything new you might want to bring home from the trip – or for dirty clothes that don’t get washed. While you’re still in list-making mode, maybe you’ll want to write out an itinerary for the trip, you can get as detailed or keep it as loose as you’d like. It just helps to have some plans written down so everyone knows what to expect.

Another important preparation before the trip is making sure the kids have something to do during travel time. You know your kids best, but I’ve found it’s fun to take mine to the dollar store a few days before we leave to pick out a few coloring books and other smaller activities. It helps them get excited for the trip, too! I’ll also download a few shows and movies on a tablet, so there’s no shortage of ways to keep the kids busy while we’re traveling.

If you bring one thing with you during your trip it should be our GERM FREAK® Kit – I never take a trip without one. This convenient zipper kit is packed with 12 products to fight germs while you’re on the go. Some of my favorites are the BISSELL® Spot + Sanitize spray, sanitizing wipes and hand sanitizer. The kit fits great in the car and passes TSA liquid rules for carry-on bags, so it’s the perfect companion to that beach read you’ve got tucked away.

“This set has everything you need for protection from germs! It definitely came in handy when we were on spring break, we stopped at a few hotels along the way & I went through with the wipes & wiped every surface I could! The screen cleaner is used every day in our home for our phones & [tablets]!”*

Once you and your family have arrived your destination, the best way to make the most of your trip is to relax!

One thing that causes that relaxed vacation state to vanish quickly is coming home to a dirty, disorganized home. My tips for success after spring break technically need to be done before you leave, but the biggest benefit to them is after your trip. So, before you leave, spend a few minutes tidying up. Don’t forget to empty the trash, run the dishwasher, wipe down counters, and show your floors some love. A few quick passes with the CrossWave® Cordless Max Multi-Surface Wet Dry Vac will leave your sealed hard floors looking shiny and debris free, plus your area rugs will feel refreshed for when you get home.

Getting ready for and having a successful spring break is easy. Even following just a few of these tips makes a big difference. I hope you have a safe, stress-free and relaxing spring break!
