We believe pets deserve to feel special all the time, and lucky for them, it’s about to get even more special for our furry friends! April 11 marks National Pet Day – which for us is any day that ends in “y”. And while National Pet Day is all about our four-legged family members, we wanted to take some time to recognize the hard work of you, the pet parents, and give you something that will make caring for your pet (and their messes) easy. Our guide for clean carpets is made specifically for pet parents. This guide will show you preventative measures to stop pet messes in their tracks, explain what to do when a mess happens, and show you the best pet safe carpet cleaner methods to use after a mess (or messes) happen.

Preventing Pet Messes

The phrase “preventing pet messes” may sound a little too good to be true. Every pet parent knows their furry guy or girl can make a mess at any moment. Their unpredictability is one of the reasons we love them so much, right? And while there are certain messes you can’t prevent, there are a few you can stop in their tracks, like pet hair. Regular vacuuming is the one way to keep up with pet hair, but we’ve got a tip to help even before you get the vacuum out – grooming.

Keeping up with grooming can lessen the amount of shedding you see. We offer a full line of grooming tools including brushes, grooming gloves, and our innovative BARKBATHTM Dual Use Dog Bath & Deep Cleaning System, which lets you you bathe your dog at home and deep clean any messes they may make on carpet or upholstery. Another helpful habit to get into (if you haven’t already) is wiping off your dog’s paws each time they come inside. It’s easy to remember to do when they come inside from the rain, but wiping off their paws EVERY time they come inside can also help reduce the amount of dirt they track inside. Try keeping our wet wipes and towel by the door to help get in to the habit.

See, Spot, Gone

Pet parents should also not underestimate the value of spot cleaning. We’ll be the first to tell you how beneficial cleaning the carpets in an entire room can be (more on that in a moment), but we’ll also be the first to admit not every pet mess on the carpet requires an entire room cleaning. It’s that exact insight that led our pet parent engineers to develop the JetScrubTM Pet Carpet Cleaner. This pet-friendly carpet cleaner is also our best lightweight, everyday carpet cleaner for sudden messes in small spaces. If that’s not enough to convince you, it also has an Express Clean Mode that leaves carpets clean and dry in about 30 minutes*! Our Professional Pet Stain & Odor Removing Pre-Treat trigger sprays and foams are also great for quickly removing pet messes and pretreating carpets before deep cleaning. They’re the perfect companion to your dog or cat friendly carpet cleaner.

Deep Cleaning for Pet Parents

So, how often should you clean your carpet if you have pets? Even though we like to tell everyone to clean their carpets once every six months, there’s not really a concrete answer for pet parents because every pet – and household – is different. We know pet owners may need to deep clean a whole lot more often, so adjust when you clean your carpet to fit your needs. Once you decide it’s time to break out the carpet cleaner and get to work, there are a few tips we can offer to pet parents to help make things easy.

First, plan it out. Carpet cleaning can take as long as you want, meaning if you want it to take all day go for it, but it can also be over in an hour or two (dry time not always included). In addition to time, your planning should also include what room (or rooms) you want to tackle and a plan to keep your furry friend busy and out of the room. Second, prepare your area. Move furniture out of the room and pretreat any visible stains. When everything is pretreated and all furniture is clear, you can get to cleaning following the steps in this video Lastly, speed up the drying time by using Express Clean Mode if your carpet cleaner offers it. . You can also point a fan towards the carpet or open up windows, if weather permits.

With the growing popularity of bare floors and area rugs, we’d be remiss if we didn’t touch on how to keep rugs clean with dogs, cats or any other kind of pets that make messes in your home. If you’re dealing with messes on rugs, the same pretreating tips apply, but you may not want to use a full-size carpet cleaner. The JetScrubTM Pet

is still a great grab-and-go option when it comes to cleaning area rugs, but so is the CrossWave® Cordless Max Multi-Surface Wet Dry Vac The cleaning benefits of this machine are right in the name! It cleans wet and dry messes on multiple surfaces at the same time, so you can vacuum up dry kibble and water spilled on the kitchen tile or refresh an area rug after a puppy piddles on it – all at the same time, since it’s safe on rugs, too!

Should your National Pet Day plans not include cleaning (and we hope they don’t), we know this guide will come in handy when you need it. Now go and celebrate your furry friend’s big day and know if a mess does happen, we’ll help you clean it up quick, so you can get back to living in the moment, not the mess, with your pet.
