May is National Pet Month and we couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate than by telling you about BISSELL Pet Foundation’s Empty the Shelters this weekend. Saturday, May 4th marks the first Empty the Shelters of 2019, and it’s shaping up to be bigger than years before. 112+ shelters in 20 states AND Canada are participating. That’s up from the 17 states that participated last year!

Once again, we at BISSELL Headquarters are getting in on the life-saving work, too. Several shelters from across West Michigan will be in one central spot, helping find pets their forever homes.

Empty the Shelters is a way for BISSELL Pet Foundation® to continue its life-saving mission. It encourages pet adoption and helps relieve overcrowded shelters by covering most of the cost for people who want to give a pet a forever home. BISSELL Pet Foundation® puts it this way – adopting a pet saves two lives, one being the pet that gets adopted and the second being the pet that takes that empty spot in the shelter.

The first Empty the Shelters was in 2016 and since then, BISSELL Pet Foundation® has held countless events, helping more than 19,000 pets find forever homes. In addition to the tens of thousands of pets BISSELL Pet Foundation has helped find forever homes, they’ve also helped more than 180,000 pets in many other ways, like awarding grants to shelters, since BISSELL Pet Foundation started its work in 2011. And BISSELL is more than happy to help support that work. Did you know when you purchase a BISSELL pet product, up to $10 is donated to help save a pet’s life? This year, adopters will pay a $25 adoption fee and BISSELL Pet Foundation® will pick up the rest. That includes microchipping and spay/neuter costs. BISSELL Pet Foundation® requires adopters register their pets’ microchips before they leave with their new furry friend. Those fees will vary by location. The idea behind this is to increase the chance of pets reuniting with their owners if they ever do get lost.

Some of the shelters will require adopters get pre-approved. To see a full list of shelters participating and whether or not they require pre-approval, click here. Pre-approval or not, all adopters will need to fill out an application at the shelter they visit in order to adopt and give the shelters the time they need to make the right decision for the animals and their future owners.

We’re so excited for this weekend’s event, and we can’t wait to hear about all the happy tails from across the country that come out of the national Empty the Shelters. Be sure to check out our social media pages and to follow along with all the excitement! #emptytheshelters #bissellhappytails
