What is wrong with my lab's ears?

0 Ratings

I have a 9 year old yellow lab. She never had any problem with her ears until she got an infection 2 years ago, which was treated and cleared. Since then, the inside flaps of her ears are very dry, crusty and itch at times, there is also an odor. I look in her ear canal and there is no drainage or odor coming from in side. What can I put on her ear flaps? Her skin is very flaky and dry, but we do bath her with a medicated shampoo for dry skin. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.....Thank you,  Debbie

Hi Debbie,

This is definitely a veterinary question, so I recommend you schedule an appointment as soon as possible to discuss what could be going on with your pup’s ears.  Labradors are one of the breeds that are prone to ear infections. In severe cases, they can lose their hearing if it goes untreated for too long.  Keep in mind, if there is odor, there is likely still an infection and your dog could be experiencing pain as well.

Best of luck! I’m sure your family veterinarian can help you get this problem cleared up.

Our girl's ears were like that till she went on thyroid medication for hypothyroidism. I'm sure that is just one of many possibilities. Best of luck!
