How do you teach kids how to hold a cat?

Great question! First of all, your child should be old enough to follow direction from you accurately and they should obey any commands you give them regarding a pet. This is for the safety of both your child and the critter.

First step is to hold the cat yourself and allow the child to pet kitty while it is secure in YOUR arms. This will help the cat gain trust in the child. When the child is ready (after a few days) to responsibly hold the cat show them how to properly hold the cat, by providing support under the chest with one hand and the back legs with the other hand. Touching the sensitive stomach area may bother the cat enough to bite, so the child should be aware of this delicate area.
