If it hasn't been used or worn in the past year, or serves no purpose,  I get rid of it. I can't stand clutter. My husband is a pack rat, so we butt heads alot over his "stash". Needless to say, his "stash" gets smaller everytime he leaves the house. He never notices anything missing, either. That tells you how important those stashed items are.

I'd like to know more about clothes.... the more you have, the less often you have to do laundry, but the larger the pile of laundry gets.  I have four kids, myself and my husband to care for.  How many outfits or tops n bottoms, should one keep?  Is 15 too many for each household member?  I don't want to have to wear the same outfit every week over and over, so one week's worth of clothes is not enough (plus then I would have to do frequent laundry, too).  But I don't need so much as to go a whole month I suppose?  What's in YOUR closet?  How many outfits do you keep on hand, and why?

Paper- if the receipt is not needed for insurance, warranties, or to return an item with a high dollar value, I throw it out.

Clothes: If I can't fit them, I give the item away.

Food- If it is unsanitary (smells, expires, discolored,) I throw the item out

If I have not used something in a while I decide if I will ever use it again.

On clothing after each season I go thru my clothes and see which ones I did not wear and I get rid of those.

I try to get rid of something every time I buy something new.  I frequently donate clothes to Goodwill because I simply don't have any room for more.

It depends. If it is a newspaper, we tend to hold on to it for a few days. No more than a week. Magazines stick around for the current month, some longer. Mail we try to throw away as soon as possible.
If it is broken and can't be fixed, we throw it out.

Clothes that have not been worn in a year, get donated.
