If it is useless, outdated or I havent used it in months out it goes. Some things that I dont use much end up in the back of the cabinet, things like cake pans or some pots etc, and definately paper products end up in the trash if I find it anywhere it does not belong!!

For clothing, every spring we hang stuff in the closet with the hanger going the opposite direction than normal ( hanging the item from behing the rod instead of from the front) Then when we wear something it gets replaced on the rod the regular way. Then in 6 months or so, everything that is still hung backwards gets donated, because this is the stuff that didn't get worn. It makes it easier to donate stuff, because you take out the emotional element. Also it's difficult to convince yourself that you MIGHT wear the time some time, when you have the evidence right in front of you that you haven't worn it in 6 months (or a year, if you prefer. That way you get in all 4 seasons)

My rule of thumb is if I haven't used it in a year I don't need it.  Depending on the item's viability it goes into three catagories, trash, Good Will or given to someone I know who can use the item.
