Anything i have not used in quite a while, i toss. On occasion i regret it when i suddenly find a use for something i threw away or realize many years later it has collectors value. Like most everything i had as a child is either rare or has some resell value now.

i go by a year...if i havent used it in the past year, i toss it. just cause some things are seasonal. like my roaster...i use it during the holidays but not in the summmer cause it heats up the house wrose than the oven.

If I haven't used it in 6 mo. to a year and it's not worth anything I throw it away. I can't function in clutter so it's easy for me :)

I clean all the closets and storage areas once a year, and if I haven't used or worn an item.. it goes to Goodwill.

Also, since my apartment is kinda small and I live alone, I have a rule: For every new item I bring into my house, something else has to go OUT! So if I buy a new pair of shoes, I find my oldest/least liked pair and give them to Goodwill.

Then to further be "Green" and try to recycle, I also pass on as much as I can so it continues to be of use to someone else before it eventually has to be thrown out. I found a local laundry mat that gladly takes my last months magazines, so I just cut my name off the cover and pass them along.. getting much more use out of the paper used to make the magazine and also keeping to my rule of when something comes in.. something goes out.

It's just discipline, but it keeps my house very tidy and organized.

Also, consider it a boost to good Karma and offer to give things you no longer use to a neighbor or friend. I just got a new convection oven, so I gave the delivery man my old (still working) oven and he was thrilled. Then since I didn't need my little convection toaster oven anymore, I gave that to my downstairs neighbor and she uses it all the time now.

i simply think 'do i really need to keep this' and if any hesitation, i toss it out or if i say 'i forgot i had this' then it's time to get rid of it

My general rule is a year. If it hasn't been touched in a year, throw it away!
