I clean all the closets and storage areas once a year, and if I haven't used or worn an item.. it goes to Goodwill.
Also, since my apartment is kinda small and I live alone, I have a rule: For every new item I bring into my house, something else has to go OUT! So if I buy a new pair of shoes, I find my oldest/least liked pair and give them to Goodwill.
Then to further be "Green" and try to recycle, I also pass on as much as I can so it continues to be of use to someone else before it eventually has to be thrown out. I found a local laundry mat that gladly takes my last months magazines, so I just cut my name off the cover and pass them along.. getting much more use out of the paper used to make the magazine and also keeping to my rule of when something comes in.. something goes out.
It's just discipline, but it keeps my house very tidy and organized.
Also, consider it a boost to good Karma and offer to give things you no longer use to a neighbor or friend. I just got a new convection oven, so I gave the delivery man my old (still working) oven and he was thrilled. Then since I didn't need my little convection toaster oven anymore, I gave that to my downstairs neighbor and she uses it all the time now.
