What are the best filters to buy? I usually just get the cheapest ones that I can find, but I figure I need better ones because I have allergy problems and I always wake up in the morning congested. but usually fine as the day goes by.

We buy blue ones from Mendards.  Not sure what brand as I don't buy them.  They are often on sale for about 50 cents a piece.
