How bad is bad till you have to repace an old carpet?

I'm wrestling with that right now.  My carpet is worn but looks presentable and I try and keep it as clean as I can.  Good astro turf outside doormates help keep a lot of sand, dust and plain ole dirt out too.  But unless they get any worse, they are fine for now.  With this economy, I don't want to make any major purchase unless absolutely necessary.

I agree, when you have more stains after you clean than before and when it smells worse after you clean than it did before, it's time to replace the carpet. Sometimes it's not even the carpet, but the pad underneath that has all the "stuff" in it. When you clean the carpet it pulls the stuff from the pad out through the carpet so you end up with the odor and stains. Nice thought, ay?

we purchused a house with an upstairs dormor as a play room, when my 3 year old had and accident i went to shampoo the carpet and it smelt worse than ever. turns out the previous owner and 3 dogs and they were up stairs alot. time to replace that carpet. :(

I think my mothers cushion under the carpet has disintegrated and is coming up when she carpet cleans.  Also more stains appear after cleaning it that before. Time to change it.
