An Angel for Amie

"What the heck is that?" was Angela Papierski's first thought when she saw the thumbnail photo of Amie Blossom, a Chihuahua mix, on Petfinder.com. The Papierskis' beloved Chihuahua, Jane, had passed away just ten days earlier from old age, but Angela knew right away that she needed someone to fill the empty place in the family, particularly for the sake of the family's other dog, Sally (also found on Petfinder), who was missing her buddy.

Pepe the Puppy

Pepe and his siblings were abandoned at a Wal-Mart parking lot and rescued by C.H.A.T Adoption Center of Wakulla County, Florida. The little guy's ribs stuck out, but he was adorable. The group posted him on Petfinder, hoping he would soon find a permanent home.

Across the state in Jacksonville, Rolando and Laura Rodriguez saw the listing.

Countdown to Zero

Zero, a Siberian Husky, was constantly in and out of Kalamazoo County Animal Services and Enforcement in Michigan when he escaped from his yard. Finally, his guardians gave up: they relinquished him to the shelter.

The staff at the shelter had grown fond of him, but no one adopted him, and they knew they couldn't hold him forever. Space is at a premium at open admission shelters, so euthanasia loomed in his future.

Diamonds in the Rough

The Zaffiris of Mullica Hill, N.J., wanted a dog and were able to look beyond the superficial and find two diamonds in the rough. The first, Hammer, a.k.a. Ozzie, originally came from an open-admission shelter in West Virginia. Pennsylvania-based Furry Friends Network transported him to New Jersey where he met the Zaffiris. Despite his poor condition, they opted to adopt him.
