My ProSeries Carpet Cleaner won't spray. What should I check?

Answer: Let's start by figuring out where your carpet cleaner can spray. If you have no spray at all, start below. If you have no spray at the floor but can spray from the hose, scroll down for the matching heading. If you have no spray from the hose but you can spray at the floor, scroll down to find another heading  for your specific troubleshooting steps.

1. First, let’s check if your brushes are rotating. If they are, go on to step 2. If not:

a. Check the pump belt to make sure it’s intact. You can access the pump belt by looking for the “Belt Access” on the right side of the machine, below the Floor Cleaning/Tools dial. Take a flathead screwdriver and push into the slots. Check the belt. If it’s damaged, you can find a replacement here: http://www.bissell.com/parts/?sc=part&productid=22496&partid=4406

b. Check the brush for damage or debris by removing it. You can do this by first unplugging and reclining the cleaner fully by pressing the foot lever. There are two screws, one for each side, to remove. If any parts seem damaged, you’ll need to take your carpet cleaner to a technician. You can find your nearest BISSELL® Authorized Service Center by clicking http://www.bissell.com/service-centers/ or by calling 1-800-237-7691, available 24 hours a day.

2. Now let’s see if there’s liquid in both tanks. If there’s not, fill the tanks and follow these steps:

a. Check for proper placement of the O-ring on the SmartMix® Cap (some O-rings are detachable and need to fit over the straw—these would be blue or black in color; the newer style are red and are molded to the cap).

b. Check for liquid in the SmartMix bottle. If there’s no liquid, the neck on the SmartMix bottle maybe undersized, the cap will not make proper contact with the base and the SmartMix bottle will need to be replaced. You can order one here: http://www.bissell.com/parts/?sc=part&productid=22496&partid=4426

c. Check for the black or red rubber tank gasket on the SmartMix Bottle Cap and on the bottom of the Tank-in-Tank®. Reattach the gasket by pushing the rounded portion of the gasket over the lip of the cap. If you need a new one, you can get one here: http://www.bissell.com/parts/?sc=part&productid=22496&partid=4605

d. Check the x-valve on the bottom of the Tank-in-Tank to make sure water will come through when the x-valve (the inside of the cap) is pressed. The bladder may be empty or the valve may be blocked internally.

e. Check if the small rounded window tabs on the floor nozzle are locked in the slots in the base and not inadvertently lifting the tank up out of place.

3. Take a look and see if any water sprays through the hose with the attachment off (be sure to set to the “tools” setting). If it does, go on to step 4. If not, follow these steps (while keeping the attachment off):

a. The cleaner may have lost prime. To prime, replace the full tanks into unit and hold the trigger in for 30 seconds with the unit turned off. Turn your cleaner on to check for spray.

b. If water still doesn’t spray through the hose with the attachment off, at this point it might be best to take your carpet cleaner to a technician. You can find your nearest BISSELL® Authorized Service Center by clicking http://www.bissell.com/service-centers/ or by calling 1-800-237-7691, available 24 hours a day.

4. Now see if the trigger has tension. Squeeze and release to see if it springs back.

a. If your trigger has tension, look at the flow indicator while squeezing the trigger. If your trigger does not have tension, go on to step 5. If water does flow through the flow indicator, go on to the next step. If water does not flow through the flow indicator, at this point it might be best to take your carpet cleaner to a technician. You can find your nearest BISSELL® Authorized Service Center by clicking http://www.bissell.com/service-centers/ or by calling 1-800-237-7691, available 24 hours a day

b. *Note: do this step over a hard surface that would not be damaged by water. Dry the area under your cleaner. Take the cap off the flow indicator and pour hot tap water (1/2 – 1 cup) into it.  Let the unit sit for about 30 seconds and then check to see if water came out to the floor. If water came out to the floor then line should be clear; test to see if your machine sprays. If no, try these steps:

                                                      I.        Check to see if water sprays to the floor. If no water sprays to the floor, check for debris on the white spray tips underneath the brush.

II.        Clean the spray tips with a soft brush (an old toothbrush works well) and a paperclip.

III.        Turn the unit on after cleaning and see if water sprays to the floor now.

IV.        If still no spray to the floor, please contact one of our Authorized Service Centers (details above) to have a technician look at your machine.

5. If your trigger does not have tension, remove the upper handle.

a. Facing the front of the machine, remove the two screws holding the handle on the unit.  In the back of the unit there are two nuts holding the bolts in place.

b. Remove the two screws on the lower part of the hose rack in the back of the unit so the hose rack comes off the unit completely.

c. Remove the flow indicator cap.

d. Inspect the handle:

I. On the bottom of the upper handle is a square push rod that connects up to the trigger.  Place a flat hand with light pressure over the tab and pull the trigger. Your hand should move downward when the trigger is pulled. (If your hand doesn’t move, see step III.)

II. If the handle is okay, look at the unit where the handle usually sits.  On the back side of the unit where the tab from the handle slides in you’ll notice a square button inside the hole.  Turn the power on and push on that square button to see if water flows through the flow indicator. Note: do this over a hard surface that would not be damaged by water.

III. If the square valve is not in place, or your hand didn’t move when you pulled the trigger, please contact one of our Authorized Service Centers to have a quality technician inspect your unit (see above steps for details).

6. If water comes through the flow indicator when you push the white button, make sure that your cleaner sprays on the floor:

a. If water does not come through the flow indicator, please contact one of our Authorized Service Centers to have a quality technician inspect your unit.

b. If water does come through the flow indicator, make sure that the unit sprays to the floor.

I. Dry area under the unit and pour hot tap water (1/2 – 1 cup) into the flow indicator.  Let the unit sit for about 30 seconds, then check to see if water came out through to the floor. If water comes out, the line should be clear; test to see if unit sprays. If not, go on to the next step.

II. Check to see if water sprays to the floor. If no water sprays to the floor, check for debris on the white spray tips behind the brushes, underneath the unit.

III. Clean them with a soft brush (an old toothbrush works well) and a paperclip.

IV. Turn the unit on after cleaning and see if water sprays to the floor now.

Start here if you have no spray from the hose but can spray at the floor:

1. First, remove any tools from the end of the hose. Does the unit spray?

a. If it doesn’t spray with the tool removed, try cleaning out the spray tip with a paper clip and stretching out the hose with some light tugs to release kinks in the water supply hose. If that doesn’t work, please take your carpet cleaner to a technician. You can find your nearest BISSELL® Authorized Service Center by clicking http://www.bissell.com/service-centers/ or by calling 1-800-237-7691, available 24 hours a day.

b. If there is spray with the tool removed, clean out the spray tip on the tool (found on the oblong black knob below the bristles) with a paperclip. If that doesn’t work, you may need to replace the tool. Click here to find the one you need: http://www.bissell.com/parts/.
