My PowerFresh® Steam Mop isn't steaming. What should I do?

Answer:
  1. First, take a look at the water tank.
    1. Remove the tank by pulling up.
    2. Check to see if there are any cracks or leaks in the tank.  Be sure to inspect the tank in a well-lit area while there’s water in the tank.  If there are any cracks or leaking, the water tank will need to be replaced. 1.  Next, check that the cap is not cracked and that the rubber gasket at the tip of the cap is still attached.

  1. Check that the x-valve is working properly. This is found in the cap, inside the rubber gasket. Push up on the valve over the sink to be sure that the water releases out of the tank.

  1. Be sure you use only water in the tank.  Putting in anything else, such as scented oils, Lysol®, or vinegar, will ruin the machine and void any warranty.
    1. If you have used any additives, rinse the water tank thoroughly with warm tap water and fill only with warm tap water.  Reinstall the tank and see if the machine begins to steam.  If it does, do not use any more additives in the future to avoid any damage.
    2. If the machine doesn’t steam after rinsing the tank, go on to step 5

  1. Have you ever heated the water prior to filling the tank (heated beyond what comes out of your tap)?
    1. If yes, is the bottle deformed?  It’s possible you added water that was too and it deformed the bottle, causing it to sit improperly in the machine. If so, you’ll need to order a new tank. You can order a replacement by clicking here: http://www.bissell.com/parts/?sc=part&productid=23228&partid=23533
    2. If not, go on to step 6.
  2. If you didn’t heat the water, how long have you allowed the mop to warm up before testing for steam?  Give the mop at least 30 seconds to 1 minute to heat before use.

  1. Check if the handle is fully inserted into the rest of the machine with no gap. The loop of the handle should face the back of the unit on the power cord side.

  1. Next, check and see if the head (base) of the mop is properly installed.
  2. Remove the head and re-install it.
  3. The head should lock in at the back of the unit with a clip and be seated right up against the unit with no gaps.

  1. Check to see if the Ready Light is on. The heater may take up to a minute to heat.
  2. If the ready light is not on, make sure power cord is plugged into a functioning outlet.
  3. If the ready light is on, wait a few more seconds. It may take up to 2 minutes for steam to form initially.

  1. If that doesn’t work, check for steam with the tank off the unit.
  2. Pour a small amount of cold water into the hole where the tank connects to the unit and wait for steam for up to 2 minutes.
  3. If the mop doesn’t steam when cold water is put into the small hole, remove the mop head and check for steam at the spray tip. Aim the spray tip into a sink or tub. Do not put any body parts near the end of the unit when checking for steam.

  1. If no steam comes out with the mop head removed, unplug the unit and let it cool. Allow at least 5 minutes for the mop to cool down.

  1. If there is steam with the mop head removed, or step 11 doesn’t work, the mop head is probably clogged.
  2. With a paperclip or tooth pick, clear out the spray tip.
  3. Pour white vinegar through the top of the mop head to clear the clog.
  4. Clear the vinegar out of the mop head by running warm water through it. Never put vinegar in the water tank.
  5. Reattach the mop head to the unit and attempt to spray into the sink or tub to check for steam.  Be safe: point away from body parts!
