My Pet Hair Eraser® vacuum has low or no suction. What should I check?

Answer: 1. Let’s start by checking for suction at the back of the vacuum, (see picture below). You’ll need to remove the hose from where it attaches to the back of the vacuum first. Note: Make sure the pre-motor filter is inserted (below the dirt container). If there’s no suction at the back, go on to the next step. If there is suction, go on to step 3.

2. If there’s no suction at the back of the vacuum:

a) Start by unplugging the vacuum.

b) Next, check the dirt container to see if it’s empty.

c) Check the Pre- and Post-Motor Filters for debris. Dirty filters can restrict airflow. The pre-motor filter may be hand-washed in cold water with mild detergent. Reinstall the filter when it is completely dry. If you don’t regularly maintain the filters, the buildup could damage the motor. Please note: the Multi-Layer Post Motor is not washable.

d) Check behind Pre-Motor filter tray. Remove the filter-tray and look in the back of the filter-tray cavity. All debris must be removed.

e) Check the upper tank for build up or clogs. Remove the inner cyclone (plastic insert connected to the top of the tank) in the dirt cup by twisting to the left and pulling down. Wipe down the upper tank, inner cyclone, and separator plate. Replace when dry.

f) If you still have poor suction, please take your vacuum to a technician. You can find your nearest BISSELL® Authorized Service Center by clicking http://www.bissell.com/service-centers/ or by calling 1-800-237-7691, available 24 hours a day.

3. If there is good suction at the back of the unit:

a) Check for good, strong suction at the end of the upholstery hose. If there is strong suction, go on to the next step. If there is not strong section, go to step d.

b) If there’s good suction, make sure the hose is firmly connected to the lower hose (next to the right wheel)

c) See if the brush is turning. If not, remove the access plate (a plastic frame over the brush roll) and check the brush and belt for damage. Be sure to clean off any debris on the brush. If brush will not turn by hand, you’ll need to replace the brush. You can do so by clicking here:

If the belt is broken, you can buy extras by clicking here:  http://www.bissell.com/parts/?sc=part&productid=2443&partid=4680&cid=ccsocial

d) Check the main hose and the lower hose for clogs. For details, check our FAQ on clearing clogs.

e) Make sure the dirt container is seated correctly. There shouldn’t be a gap between the dirt container and the upper tank.

4. On the back of the vacuum, remove the upholstery hose (rotate clockwise and pull out) and the clear L shaped molded tubing that attaches to the upper tank (pull from top and the bottom will come out). (Pictured below.)

5. Check the left and right holes where the tubes connected for debris. Also check the lower hole where the clear tube inserts and the clear tube itself. Once clear, reattach the clear tube and the hose.

7. Check the Pre- and Post-Motor Filters for debris. Dirty filters can restrict airflow. The pre-motor filter may be hand-washed in cold water with mild detergent.
